History of Calvary Chapel

Calvary Chapel of the Triad is in a stream of churches that has become known as the Calvary Chapel movement. Beginning in the 60's, Calvary Chapel began with an explosion that has continued for the last 40 years. There are now well over 1,000 Calvary Chapels worldwide in many different countries, with 12 now in North Carolina. Ministries such as the Harvest Crusades with Pastor Greg Laurie (who came to Winston-Salem in Sept '02) and Maranatha Music began with the home church Calvary Chapel Costa Mesa with Pastor Chuck Smith. For more on the movement please check out the web site on our links page or watch 'A Venture in Faith' movie online.

Calvary Chapels are non-denominational and yet in line with most Evangelical Christian churches. There are, however, certain things that make us unique. We place a high priority on the study of God's Word. We have seen first-hand the power it has to feed and challenge the Christian and to confront and convict the non-believer. Having experienced it's life-changing power, we place great emphasis on God's Word. Here at Calvary Chapel of the Triad, Pastor David teaches verse by verse, chapter by chapter, throug the entire Bible on Sunday morning and Thursday night.

Our worship is contemporary, relevant and focused on the Lord. We incorporate multi-media tastefully into the worship service. Our dress is casual, so that we can approach God as who we are. Having received both grace and forgiveness ourselves, we emphasize those as opposed to works based denominations that only bring frustration and futility to a Christian's life.

Pastor David McGee, after many years of ministry in the Calvary Chapel stream, longed to see a Calvary Chapel planted where he was born and raised. His family has been here for over 275 years. With a simple faith in God and believing that God wanted to see a balanced and Bible-believing church in the Triad, the McGee's started a Bible study in their home in the fall of 2001. The very first night of the study two neighborhood kids received the Lord as their Savior! For the next year, as Pastor David also worked for Pastor Greg Laurie and the Harvest Crusades, God blessed and knitted a core group of believers together. In October of 2002, this small group of 15-20 believers rented a facility in Kernersville with an expectation that God would continue to bless them.

What has happened since then is a story that shows both the blessing and validation of what God will do with those that trust Him and not growth programs. Since October of 2002, the church has grown from 15 people to a weekly attendance of over 1,400. Although some of this has been 'transfer growth' (folks coming over from different churches) a significant amount has been the unchurched and the backslidden. In the last twelve months, over 100 people have been baptized!

We moved into our new facility in November. In March we needed to add a second service to accomodate the growth. The Lord continued to bring people in such numbers that we realized we needed more space. So when God provided the opportunity for us to occupy the entire 37,000 sq. ft. facility, we signed a five year lease and began converting the rest of the building into much needed rooms and a new, larger sanctuary. The conversion of the building from a manufacturing plant into a church is a continuing process as we continue to grow. We praise God that He is doing such a mighty work here. People are being saved. People are having their faith renewed, their marriages healed and their walk with the Lord restored. It is glorious! We look forward to seeing what He will do in the future. We invite you to take part in this exciting time and see what God can do in your life, family and community. God's Word with God's Spirit changing God's people-it's just that simple.
